Encoding Recovery
When it does not work
What cannot be recovered, and the limits of saving as EUC-KR.
Repair changed nothing
Both reversals were tried and neither improved on what you have. Common reasons:
- The text was already saved as question marks or boxes — that information is gone.
- The corruption happened twice (misread, then missaved). This tool reverses one layer.
- The text is not Korean. Repair currently judges by whether Korean syllables increase.
Saving as EUC-KR produced question marks
Some characters have no place in EUC-KR — emoji, various symbols, archaic Hangul. Those become question marks, and it cannot be undone, so keep the original.
Browsers also differ slightly in how much of the CP949 extension they cover.
My subtitle file shows nothing
For subtitles, the subtitle converter fits better — it uses the same encoding detection but also reads the timing.
